Chapter 4, Question 1

There is a difference between knowledge and wisdom, in that knowledge is basically gaining new information and purely learning. Whereas, those people who have wisdom are able to apply and understand concepts and apply them to their life. Knowledge and wisdom are both gained through education and personal experience but wisdom does not require formal education. In schools, you gain knowledge as well as wisdom. But you can gain insight about life, the world, and much more without schooling and that is where wisdom comes in. Older people are considered wiser although they might not have attended Ivy League schools or anything close to it, they have lived longer and experienced more. As youth, we have a hard time grasping the fact that our parents know more than us, and that’s only because of the fact that we confuse knowledge for wisdom. The experiences that we go through and learn from allow us to gain wisdom whereas the information that we gain allows us to gain more knowledge.  Having more information has made us more knowledgeable but not any wiser at all.

  1. Hello Sigma Love,

I think you did a great job on comparing and contrasting knowledge and wisdom. Wisdom can be picked up anywhere, and you might not even notice when you gained it. In my opinion, wisdom is something that people use and apply knowledge in daily life. For instance, you learn the theory of making critical decision in this critical thinking class. As you practice it in your daily life, you will be more used to the theory and use it wiser. The experience is being accumulated, and that is wisdom. It is true that elder people sometimes are wiser, even though they have a good education background. The thing that makes them smarter is wisdom that gathered from their own life experience, which no one way to gain it except to experience it.

    Thanks,
    Adrian

  2. I agree what you say about knowledge and wisdom. I like they way you describe people with wisdom as able to apply and understand concept and to apply it to their life. When you go through something in life, you understand the situation and realize many different things. Sometimes in life the same exact thing can occur to you and when you have past experience you will be able to make wise decisions that you did before when the same incident happens. I also feel like the experiences we face in life also helps us gain more knowledge on the certain situation.

  3. Hey,

I really like how you addressed this whole knowledge vs wisdom situation. I agree with you wisdom comes with personal experience and living life. Knowledge is more about learning through scholarly information. Yes, older people are wise, but at the same time children could be wise through there innocence. Sometimes kids have the best advice, because they do not overthink situations. I also like how you said children mix up knowledge and wisdom, because they cannot process that type of difference. My little cousin was actually talking about wisdom and knowledge and perceived them as the same thing. As you grow though, you have more experience with life and figure out that they are actually different things.

    Good post,

  4. I agree with you that wisdom doesn't require formal education because I believe everyone has wisdom, some more than others. I really liked the sentence you used about how youth today have a hard time grasping the fact that our parents know more than us because it's true. Like that saying goes, "moms know everything", as a girl I know it's true because she was once in my position and has experienced things before that I am experiencing now. It's always good to have someone older and wiser to be there for you because they're able to give you advice. School makes us gain both wisdom and knowledge, wisdom for the experiences we go through, and knowledge for the information we learn in our classes. Wisdom is something that you don't necessarily notice yourself gaining, whereas knowledge, you do.

  5. Hi Sigma,

I agree with you where you say that knowledge is gaining new information but wisdom is applying and understanding it so that it can be used in our everyday lives. I also agree that wisdom can be gained without a good education. We get wisdom without even trying by just going on with our lives. I also like you example with kids having a hard time understanding that our parents have more wisdom than their kids but might not necessarily have more knowledge. I thought the same thing when I was in high school. I think having a lot of knowledge just shows how good someone is at memorization.
